Apparently Tesla’s autopilot can’t be your designated driver.

This story really disappoints me.

I wish it was easier to find one’s previous comments because I made this same point to someone that there is no legal way that autopilot would work in your favor.
It was sometime after the guy watching harry potter died from driving under a tractor trailer.
ETA: I hope CHP throws the book at his dumbass!

That’s what happens when you call something that isn’t autopilot “autopilot”, and put it in a product that pretends to be with it but attracts dopey money at least as well as any other.

No, certainly not passed out. But you might be more likely to escape detection/be less of a menace at just over the legal limit. Not advocating that, BTW.

Yeah as someone who regularly drives US 27 (the highway where that crash happened), it’s a friggin’ gongshow. High speeds, no controlled access, left turns, and rolling hills. Shouldn’t have even been possible to enable Autopilot on that road.

Having spent some time in Silicon Valley/Bay Area, it’s disappointing but not surprising.

*not advocating for this behavior* BUT. At least the car seems to have stopped? It’s not totally clear from the blurb, but you know, this idiot probably would have been driving himself anyway, in a regular car. At least the car didn’t careen into innocent people when he passed out. Small silver lining? Again, NOT ADVOCATING FOR THIS.

I believe the Tesla system is programmed to bring the car to a controlled stop with the flashers on if it doesn’t detect your hands on the wheel for a long enough period.

To be fair, airplane autopilot also requires attentive pilots -it’s a helper, not fully automatic flight.

Good point, but I think planes and Teslas attract operators of different mindset. An aircraft pilot generally knows the limitations of the machine and its systems. In my opinion, too many Tesla drivers (at least the local demographic) will be smitten with the mere idea of the trendy brand and fast-off-the-line EV, and think it can do everything. Really poor decision calling it “Autopilot”, I think.

I’ve heard that too, and it would also ideally pull over to the side of the road, if I recall correctly. Guy should have jammed an orange in the wheel. (don’t take me seriously, please!)

I honestly don’t know why the system isn’t programmed to pull over to the side when it needs to stop. I honestly don’t think it can do anything except hold a lane without driver input.
I’m with you on thinking all the current systems are under cooked and over hyped so I wouldn’t take that seriously.

I guess that makes sense; especially where really, most of the time, the area to the right of the white line is not a nice, wide, smooth surface. Pulling off the road safely is something that will be very hard for an automated car to learn.
